Pemberton Music Festival cancellation good news for couples needing July wedding venue

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The mayor of Pemberton admits last week’s sudden cancellation of a major tourism draw hurts, but Mike Richman is confident the village can quickly bounce back.

He says it’s not the first time something like this has happened.

“As much as it was a big economic driver, it’s certainly not our only economic driver and we’re a thriving little community. As far as I’m concerned, we live on the most beautiful place on the Earth and so, people are going to come see us. Tourism will continue to grow and thrive and so, you know, it’s a loss for sure. Is it crippling? No.”

Richman adds local hotels and resorts that were booked up for mid-July suddenly have space for last-minute wedding receptions or other events blocked out because of the festival.

“We’re a very popular destination wedding area, so a lot of folks come up to our area to get married. So, that weekend, most providers did not book weddings.”

Richman admits it’s probably too late to find a promoter willing to put on a smaller-scale concert in the middle of July, but he’s open to suggestions.

“We’ve proven to be a pretty great location, a pretty great venue for a show that profile and that scale. My thoughts are there’s other production companies that will recognize that and we have conversations in the near future.”

As for what happens to everyone owed money by organizers of the festival, a creditors’ meeting is planned for June 6th.
