Warmer temperatures, rising water levels add to new Okanagan evacuation warnings

By

KELOWNA (NEWS 1130) – Warm temperatures and a quickly rising lake have prompted two new evacuation alerts this evening.

Affected are a string of waterfront properties mainly on Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna and the West Bank First Nation.

Bruce Smith at the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre says people in these areas should be prepared to leave at a moments notice.

“We’ve been telling property owners here along the waterfront on Okanagan Lake that they should be preparing their flood defences for 343.6 (cm), giving them a 60 centimetre buffer for wind and weather related action.”

He says with daytime temperatures rising into the 30’s, the area can expect to see more high elevation snowpack melting and flowing into e creeks and lakes, raising levels further.

West Kelowna:

  • 1302 to 1454 Green Bay Road
  • 3660 to 3697 Green Bay Landing
  • 3575 to 3636 Wiig Road

Westbank First Nation IR#10

  • Waterfront lots from the W.R. Bennett Bridge north to Old Ferry Wharf Road
  • Several lakefront cabins on Lindley Road

To help with protecting private properties to the recommended 343.6 metre mark, go to the Flood FAQs section.  It has directions on how to measure for flood levels and build barriers to the appropriate height to account for both lake level flooding and wave action.
