A look at who ‘Mad’ Max Bernier is

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – The federal Conservative party is set to select its first permanent leader since Stephen Harper this afternoon.

While 13 candidates are still in the race, many political experts expect Quebec MP Maxime Bernier to easily win.

Bernier is not what you would call a traditional Conservative because he is a Libertarian.

One thing you’ll hear a lot from Bernier is ending supply management. The goal would be to lower prices for consumers and scrapping subsidies for several industries.

Political Scientist David Moscrop with SFU says that would mean taking on the Canadian Dairy Industry.

“Which is a position that almost no Canadian politician takes, but he takes it because he wants government to be a lot smaller. He’s deeply committed to smaller government, he wants to cut taxes deeply.”

But his views on health care and his record in the Harper government will give fodder to his opponents.

Moscrop outlined some of the arguments his opponents will likely make.

“He wants to dismantle your healthcare, he wants to destroy Canadian farms, he wants to break apart all that’s good in Canada, and remember the time he left a bunch of classified files sitting around.”

Moscrop says many of those fears will be overstated, especially healthcare because even if he did want to move away from a single-payer healthcare system, there are too many people who would stand in his way.
