‘No U-turn’ signs disappearing in Coquitlam to improve traffic safety

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A Metro city is taking down its ‘no U-turn’ signs in a bid to boost road safety.

The move may seem counter-intuitive, but Dan Mooney, the City of Coquitlam’s transportation manager, says the signs are causing more confusion than assistance.

He explains not everyone knows you can’t make a U-turn at intersections with traffic signals in BC.

“We have 146 traffic signals, they’re owned and operated by the City of Coquitlam. We have about a dozen where we have these ‘no U-turn’ signs.”

“RCMP told us that they had heard some concerns about, when they were out doing enforcement, people were saying ‘I saw the no U-turn signs at that last traffic signal but not at this traffic signal so I was presuming it was legal’.”

The intersection of Lougheed Highway and Westwood Street is a trouble spot for U-turns.

“As one person’s making a U-turn, it quite often conflicts with someone who’s making a right turn on the left-hand side, they don’t expect that other vehicle to be a conflict with them.”

He says many of the U-Turn signs were installed before the traffic lights were put in.

“So they are really, truly redundant.”
