Burnaby students create wildlife app as sightings spike

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Between bears and deer, there has been no shortage of wildlife sightings across Metro Vancouver lately.

As the encounters with animals and people climb in the region, a pair of local students have produced an app to let you know when animals are in your yard.

Using data compiled by WildSafe BC, 12-year-old Isadora Vieytes and 11-year-old Carina Chen, a couple of students at Cameron Elementary School, came up with the Wildlife Alert Reporting App.

The pair say it was designed to protect both people and animals. “It will give you a notification if an animal is seen in your radius. Then it says, ‘A wolf has been seen in this area,’ or any other animal. The app knows where you are and where the animals are.”

The app uses your GPS to pinpoint your location. “The file has when they were seen, what time they were seen, the latitude and longitude of where they were seen and it tells you exactly where they were.”

The app was designed as part a global tech competition for girls.

It has been picked to be one of Canada’s 10 semi-finalists in the junior division with the finalists being selected later this month.
