Levels fall slightly on Lake Okanagan, weather remains a concern

KELOWNA (NEWS 1130) – Barriers in the central Okanagan are staying firmly in place as lake levels continue to sit at historic highs.

Okanagan Lake was measured at 343.248 metres above sea level on Sunday, four millimeters higher than Saturday morning. It has since dropped by eight millimeters according to Kirsten Jones with the Emergency Operations Centre.

“Any weather event could also really exasserbate things. So we’re definitely not out of the woods,” she says.

“We like to see the level going down, but I couldn’t tell you that it’s going to continue to go down. We may still see it fluctuate.”

Rain is expected to start falling in Kelowna mid-week.

Jones adds lots of people are wondering how to dispose of sandbags, but she says that information isn’t being given out yet, because the bags need to stay where they are.

Crews are routinely checking those barriers to make sure they’re effective.
