The election may be over in BC, but the campaigning is not

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s not your imagination: BC’s MLAs are still in campaign mode as they gear up for the possibility of another election in the not-too-distant future.

A new Ipsos Reid poll of 802 British Columbians suggests the NDP and BC Liberals are in a statistical tie. Among decided voters, 42 per cent say they would support the NDP, 40 per cent support the BC Liberals, and 15 per cent say they’d vote for the Greens.

University of the Fraser Valley political science professor Hamish Telford says given numbers that close, voters can expect the hand-shaking and promises to continue.

“This tends to be the way with minority governments that can fall at any time,” he explains. “This minority government, whether it’s Liberal or NDP, is going to be especially precarious. Parties will be in perpetual campaign mode.

“This is sort of a feature of modern politics anyway.”

Telford adds all three parties may be trying to raise money and pad their coffers before new campaign finance rules come into effect.

Christy Clark’s minority government is not expected to survive a confidence vote when the legislature resumes on June 22nd.
