Strawberry-picking season hits BC

By

FRASER VALLEY (NEWS 1130) – Pull up your gum boots, it’s time to head out into the picking fields.

The short window to grab some juicy BC-grown strawberries is now open.

Alf Krause with the BC Strawberry Growers Association says the season will only be a few weeks long, and it’s started later than last year.

“The earliest was last year, almost a month early. We started picking strawberries on the 14th of May which was a record.”

“…it’s later than last year, but the reality is it’s normal this year. The last couple of years it was exceptionally early. So we’re pushing back and it’s not like last year, that’s for sure.”

The colder and wetter than normal winter shouldn’t impact things either.

“I think overall that there might be less acreage of strawberries but I believe that the acreage that is in is growing and looking good.”

A California ever-bearing variety of the berry will be available from late July through September.

“The exciting part about the ever-bearing strawberry is that it peaks now but then it’ll come back end of July and go all the way until the end of September.”
