Parents of crash victims slam 90-day sentence for the woman responsible

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – The families of two young people killed in a 2010 crash on Lougheed Highway are slamming the 90-day jail sentence handed to the woman responsible.

Andelina Hecimovic was previously convicted on two counts of dangerous driving causing the deaths of Johnny De Oliveira, 21, and his girlfriend Beckie Dyer, 19.

Along with three months behind bars, Hecimovic will serve 120 hours of community service, two years probation, and will be banned from driving for three years.

“It wasn’t much of a deterrent, that’s for sure,” says Debbie Dyer, Beckie’s mother.

“It’s not showing the public that our justice system is actually a justice system. It’s more of a legal system.”

Court heard that Hecimovic, a nurse who was 23 at the time of the crash, was speeding through a red light in a right-turn-only lane on Lougheed Highway when she lost control of her car.

It slammed into the small SUV occupied by Oliveira and Dyer, who were driving back from a Justin Bieber concert.

The pair were killed when the roof of their car was ripped off by another car near Harris Road.
