Motion for Keefer St site to be developed for social housing

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A contentious Chinatown development rejected by Vancouver City Council earlier this month could be revived in a different from, if one city councillor gets her way.

Green councillor Adriane Carr wants the city to quickly pursue options to buy the 105 Keefer St site and develop it as 100 per cent social housing, especially for seniors. Carr is introducing a motion on Tuesday.

King-Mong Chan with the Chinatown Action Group says it’s a good start.

“We also want to see a lot more social space for seniors and cultural activities. The proposal that the developer put forward was a very small space, only about a thousand square feet. We want to see a larger space that’s permanent and it’s public, sort of like a community centre.

“We want the land to be in public hands and we don’t want this to be passed around to different levels of government. So, all three of them working together to first acquire the site and then to develop it for fully, 100 per cent social housing and other things that the community needs as well.”

The rejected proposal had set aside 25 social housing units alongside 106 market condominiums.
