Liberals see surge in support after Throne Speech: poll

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Christy Clark and company are in better shape if the Lieutenant Governor calls a snap election today instead of giving the NDP and Greens a chance to form government.

A new survey from Mainstreet Research suggests the popularity of the Liberals has jumped to 45 per cent after the Throne Speech last Thursday. The Liberals are now 10 points ahead of John Horgan and the New Democrats.

The company’s Quito Maggi says there’s a reason why they picked up some former Green Party supporters. “Seeing [Andrew] Weaver and the Greens behaving just like all other political parties in the past month and a half has made some people cynical I think.”

He adds the support starting surging late last week. “We found in our last poll on May 17th that a significant majority (58 per cent) wanted the Green Party to support the government on a vote by vote basis, and not a formal coalition or collaboration arrangement with any party. There has been heightened interest in BC politics which is evident from the low rate of undecided voters. It’s possible that the greatest driver of votes at the moment in the perceived instability in British Columbia,” adds Maggi.

Last month’s contentious election saw the Liberals win 43 seats, one seat short of a majority, but the combined seat totals of the NDP, with 41 seats, and the Greens, with three seats, gives them 44 seats in the 87-seat legislature.
