Campfire ban in place in the Cariboo

QUESNEL (NEWS 1130) – If you’re planning to spend the Canada Day long weekend in the wilderness, you’ll probably be able to gather around a campfire. However, there is one region in the province with a partial ban in place. The province says that region is the Cariboo.

Fire Information Officer Claire Allen says campfires are banned in the Cariboo-Chilcotin Forest District west of the Fraser River, and throughout a provincial park. “You can have a campfire stove with a flame under 15 centimetres — that would be like a camping apparatus, but no campfires in the area.”

Allen adds it’s important not to put too much stock in the fact we had a damp spring, because things are drying out quickly. “While we’ve got good weather, that does mean that our forest conditions are quite dry, and we definitely don’t want people to get caught up in the fact that we did have quite a damp spring cause things are drying out quite quickly in our forests.”

If you do light a campfire, you need at least eight litres of water or a shovel on hand to extinguish it and make sure it’s cool to the touch when you leave.
