City of Vancouver expects new plaza to open in late September

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver will soon have another public plaza.

It will be located where city hall’s East Wing used to be. The office building was methodically dismantled starting last fall, following reports that found it wouldn’t have survived an earthquake.

While the East Wing is now gone, the podium has been retained.

Director of facilities planning Danica Djurkovic says the podium has the potential to host a variety of activities.

“Some people are thinking about basketball courts, other are seeing a jazz festival venue or outdoor theatre. Right now everything is on the table.”

The podium will be getting a bit of an upgrade.

“There will be some landscaping elements. It will feel much more open from Yukon Street. There will be some grand views. And we are considering some furniture,” says Djurkovic.

The plaza, which will be about 20,000 square feet in size, should be open public use at the end of September.
