BC Ferry rescues stranded boaters near Galiano Island

GALIANO ISLAND (NEWS 1130) – Passengers on the Queen of Nanaimo had quite the journey Friday afternoon as the ship rescued some stranded boaters.

The 130-metre long ferry had just departed Galiano Island when the captain heard the mayday call, Darin Guenett with BC Ferries said.

“So they responded like they do, and it turns out there was a speedboat that ran aground near by.”

The Queen launched a rescue boat and got all seven people off the stranded speedboat and were later transferred to a customs vessel nearby.

None of the people on board were hurt.

Most passengers likely weren’t too bothered by the delay, because responding to these types of situations is part of BC Ferries and its staff’s responsibility, Guenett said.

“We’re professional mariners trained to respond, and they do a great job of that.”
