Influx of wildfire evacuees register at Cloverdale reception centre

CLOVERDALE (NEWS 1130) – Since opening, the Cloverdale Arena has seen a steady stream of evacuees at its doors for registration & information.

108 cots have been set up at the evacuation centre, but so far, no one has had to use them.

Mayor Linda Hepner says there’s been an outpouring of support from the community.

“My office is getting asked all of the time, ‘what more can we do? What can we do to help, what can we do to help?’ So the people are there and to me that speaks to the strength of the support that we’re here to give these people.”

Inside, the whirr of metal fans is constant below the hum of volunteers registering people with the Red Cross and handing out information.

Evacuees like Fay Buchana seem impressed with how smoothly things have gone.

“Perfect, it’s wonderful, I can’t believe the help. I’m just, I’m totally in awe, really I am. We’re just so blessed,” says Buchana from Williams Lake. “They did so quickly too, and everybody’s so nice.”

The wildfire reception centre in Cloverdale is open 7am until 9pm.

An evacuation centre has also been set up in the Fraser Valley, where the Chilliwack Secondary School now has room for 124 evacuees to sleep.
