Potential impact of the new NDP government on small businesses

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – A big part of politics at any level is about standing up for the little guy. However, some aren’t sure the new NDP government in this province has their back. Specifically, small business owners.

Laura Jones with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says it’s very early, but there are some positives to focus on.

“Small businesses are a very good representation of the middle class, and it tends to be a group that, whatever your political stripe, it’s important to make sure that your policies work for them, because a healthy, strong middle class is important for the health of the province, and the health of the country.”

Jones adds not everything will be rosy, saying the new government should pay attention to the fact BC business owners are a little concerned about affordability for running their day-to-day operations.

She says small businesses have worked well with other governments before, no matter what the lean is, and she’s excited to have the CFIB get involved.

“We would like to see the government come up with some kind of answer to the PST problem, the problem being we are not very competitive with charging PST on business inputs.”

Jones says common ground, according to CFIB survey data, can be found with the government when it comes to getting rid of corporate and union donations to political parties, something the NDP has promised to do.
