Major roadwork to begin on Knight Street

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The City of Vancouver is out with information about new safety improvements being implemented at the Knight Street and Southeast Marine Drive interchange

Roadwork will begin on July 30th to improve, what city staff describe as connectivity, for all road users at this busy intersection and off-ramp.

The interchange is currently the highest car crash location in Vancouver. “The project will improve safety through design and signalization changes to the intersection and bridge ramps, upgraded street lighting, and enhanced traffic monitoring systems,” says the city in a statement.

Changes to the interchange

  • A new turn bay to provide access from westbound SE Marine Drive to northbound Knight Street
  •  Enhancements to the region’s movement of goods
  •  Improved conditions for people walking, cycling, and using transit with a new shared walking and cycling path

The upgrades were approved by city council more than two years ago.

The work will involve traffic delays in the area, however, crews will try to mitigate the impact to drivers. Construction on the off-ramps will happen at night, typically between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Work on SE Marine Drive will take place during the day, with the exception of morning and afternoon rush hours. However, significant delays are expected for northbound traffic on the Knight Street Bridge after 8 p.m. Folks heading north are being asked to find another route.

All the roadwork is expected to be completed by November 2017.
