Evacuation order issued for Clinton

By

CLINTON (NEWS 1130) – The Village of Clinton is just the latest community to clear out,  after an evacuation order was issued at about 4:45 p.m, Saturday.

A little over 600 people live in the community, which sits between Cache Creek and 70 mile house.

Debbie Sell with Thompson-Nicola Regional District Emergency Operations says their evacuation buses, which transport people who don’t have their own vehicles, have been busy.

“We happened to have buses that were coming back from Williams Lake, we had just taken a number of evacuees up (there), and those buses were actually on their way back to Kamloops so we diverted them to Clinton.”

The fire that is threatening Clinton is the same one that drove folks in Loon Lake and Cache Creek from their homes a few weeks back.

The BC Wildfire Service says this fire has grown because of gusty winds, and they’re putting all available options toward fighting it.

The TNRD has also issued an evacuation order for the south and east of Green Lake, which was earlier under an alert, and 70 Mile House.

Meanwhile, the Cariboo Regional District says they have put a handful of properties on the north side of Green Lake under an evacuation alert.

There is, however, some encouraging news further north on Highway 97 as people from 100 Mile House are no longer on alert, but the district says that could change at any time.

The Prime Minister visits BC

As the new evacuation order was announced, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Revelstoke to drum-up support for those affected by the fires.

This was the Prime Minister’s first trip to BC since the emergency wildfire situation began. Trudeau says he’s planning to visit fire ravaged communities to view the damage and salute the first responders on the fire lines.

He is asking Canadians to donate to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts in our province’s fire-ravaged communities.

Trudeau says Canadians always help their neighbours in difficult times and the thousands in BC who have had to flee their homes need a helping hand.
