VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A by-election will be held on October 14th to restore the Vancouver School Board and allow people to elect new trustees.
“Our government is restoring a democratically elected board of education to ensure legitimacy and fair representation for Vancouver residents and to better serve students,” Education Minister Rob Fleming said. “Re-establishing the board as a vehicle for public discussion, debate and decisions is part of our commitment to fix our education system.”
It will coincide with a civic by-election to replace Vision Vancouver Councillor Geoff Meggs who’s left to serve as the Chief of Staff for new Premier John Horgan.
According to Fleming, holding the two by-elections will save the district close to $1.5 million dollars.
The board was fired by former BC Liberal Education Minister Mike Bernier in October 2016, and replaced with Dianne Turner as the single trustee.
“This is an opportunity for renewal that will benefit students, parents, teachers and staff,” Fleming said. “I look forward to working with an elected board to expedite seismic projects and improve programs for students in the Vancouver School District.”
