Young college student is victim of Surrey’s latest killing, no arrests

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – One day after a body was discovered in a burned out SUV in a rural area of Surrey, police have identified the victim.

They say 19-year-old Bhavkiran (Kiran) Dhesi was found in the car in the area of 24th Avenue between 184th and 188th Streets.

IHIT says Dhesi was last seen leaving the family home on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Her killing is not believed to be random. “IHIT is working closely with the Surrey RCMP to determine motive, and Miss Dhesi’s whereabouts prior to her murder. Miss Dhesi was not known to police, and the investigation to date indicates that her death was not related to gang activity,” says Corporal Meghan Foster

Police are making a desperate appeal that anyone who knows her come forward with information. “Dhesi was a college student, and had recently recovered from a kidney transplant. This death is a crushing blow to Miss Dhesi’s family, and they are suffering terribly,” adds Foster. “I know when I was that age I had friends in various areas of my life. I had different groups of friends and if there was something going on in my life maybe I hadn’t told one friend about, but I told another. We’re assuming just because we’ve spoken with people known to her, maybe there are people beyond that that have information.”

Foster said she couldn’t comment on whether Dhesi was linked to anyone involved in gangs or the drug trade.

The killing comes just days after Surrey Mounties released the images of five men, they said, were the targets of an ongoing gang conflict south of the Fraser River. To date, there have been just over two dozen shootings or shots fired calls in Surrey which is down 47 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the IHIT tipline at 1.877.551.IHIT (4448) or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477).
