Early morning shooting in Richmond

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – A rude awakening for people living in the area of Waterton Drive near Steveston Highway and No. 3 Road in Richmond after gunshots rang out early this morning.

Mounties say it happened shortly before 6 a.m. One person was hit and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

“This is an active and unfolding investigation,” says Acting Corporal Adriana Peralta. “We want to stress to the public that we take their safety seriously and have engaged every available resource to investigate this incident and ensure their safety.”

Neighbours in the area, some who have lived there for decades, say this is the first time they’ve heard of anything like this happening. Former area MLA Allan Warnke describes the house where the shooting took place. “Last year there were people who were definitely not fitting the profile of the neighbourhood, but that’s pretty well it.”

It’s unclear if this is a targeted hit or linked to any other gun violence in the Lower Mainland recently, including two targeted shootings of young people in Abbotsford over the BC Day long weekend.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Richmond RCMP at 604.278.1212 or CrimeStoppers at 1.800.222.8477 (TIPS).
