Surrey woman suffers minor injuries after driving wrong way on Hwy 1

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – It was a frightening situation along Highway 1 last night, as a woman drove at high speed on the wrong side of the highway and across the Port Mann Bridge.

About 7:45 p.m. the woman was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes, causing a number of drivers to swerve out of harm’s way. Cars crashed into concrete dividers between 160th and 176th in Surrey, before the woman continued speeding on to the Port Mann Bridge.

Mounties got a chopper in the air — and a short time later an officer was able to divert the woman off the road near the Brunette Ave off-ramp, where she had a minor crash with a police vehicle.

“The female driver was then taken into custody. She was dealing with some emotional distress as well, she was transported over to the hospital for some minor treatment,” says Sergeant Darren Pankratz with Coquitlam RCMP.

He says the woman has been released from custody, and police are considering charges.

Police say one of the cars struck as a result of this had a pair of kids inside, but luckily no one was hurt.
