Fire along Steveston Harbour forces festival to cancel events

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – A fire is to blame for the Richmond Maritime Festival ending sooner than expected Saturday evening.

People at the Britannia Shipyards were told to go home because flames sparked up in the late afternoon along Steveston Harbour, just east of the festival.

“We were just right on the water there, and one of the warehouses had this black smoke coming through it, and it smelled like chemicals burning,” listener Donna tells NEWS 1130.

The City of Richmond says tonight’s live music and activities at the Maritime Festival have been cancelled, although the event will continue tomorrow morning, so long as air quality isn’t a concern.

There are reports chemicals were burning in the fire, which appears to be out.
