Surrey bikers rally to end violence

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Crowds of bikers wearing their full club colours and black turbans will be roaring through the streets of Surrey today, protesting against the gun and drug violence that has swept up so many young people in the city.
After years of public meetings and promises, members of the Sikh Motorcycle Club want to publicly pressure politicians to make Surrey and surrounding municipalities safer.
“This ride is in the wake of all the shootings and all the drug issues. Our youth are being killed,” says club member Azad Sidhu. “We have to tell the authorities that we need concrete solutions for the community so our kids can be safe. We don’t work hard and raise our kids so that once they turn 18 years old they get shot and killed on the streetside.”
Up to 100 members of the Sikh Motorcycle Club will be firing up their bikes and rolling through Surrey starting at 4:30 this afternoon, heading from the Guru Nanak Gurdwara on 120th Street to Surrey’s RCMP Headquarters.
“We will be there and other motorcycle clubs are invited. People can join us in cars, the families who are affected or who are concerned. Every concerned citizen from Surrey or surrounding municipalities can join us,” Sidhu tells NEWS 1130.
“This is something that is our mutual responsibility, our duty towards our country and community. We have lots of rights and amenities given to us in this country and there are certain duties we need to perform,” he adds.
“We need a safe community because people have come to Canada from different parts of the world to live a peaceful happy life. I don’t know where we go next from here.”
There have been more than 30 shootings or shots fired calls in Surrey so far in 2017, including three within 12 hours earlier this month.
