Mill fire in Maple Ridge sparked during grinding work

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – A fire at the Noble Custom Cut mill in the Maple Ridge area sent thick smoke into surrounding areas today.

“There was quite a bit of smoke upon arrival but it was contained to a small area so we were able to get water on it fairly quickly and contain it from spreading to the rest of the mill,” says Assistant Fire Chief Mark Smitton with the Maple Ridge Fire Department.

He explains the fire appears to have started because of a grinder crews were using, that may have sent sparks into wood waste.

“We got a call from workers on site that there was a fire, so we responded with six vehicles and two water trucks from Mission,” says Smitton, who explains crews had to bring water trucks because there are no hydrants in that area.

“It’s billowing out of the main part of the mill,” describes Carla who called NEWS 1130 shortly after seeing flames.

Mill fires happen from time to time when things are extraordinarily dry, explains Smitton.

No one was hurt.
