Bellingham removes US Civil War reminder

BELLINGHAM (NEWS 1130) – You don’t have to go very far to find reminders of the US Civil War being taken down.

Bellingham’s mayor Kelli Linville says she ordered signs identifying the Pickett Bridge be removed because George Pickett fought for the Confederacy.

“We don’t want to honour anyone who was fighting to divide our country.”

Pickett has ties to Bellingham, as he helped build Fort Bellingham.

Linville says some community members say they’re uncomfortable with a landmark bearing the name of a Confederate general, but expects some people to be unhappy with the decision.

“I think that we’re going to have actually a very passionate and important discussion about what our community stands for.”

The Bellingham City Council has also requested its administration look into the possible renaming of the Pickett Bridge.

This follows a similar push in many US cities to remove monuments to the unsuccessful Confederacy.
