Germans and Aussies flock to BC, overseas visitor numbers rise

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – British Columbia saw a five per cent increase in international visitors in June, thanks largely to a rise in German and Australian visitors.

There were 35,000 more visitors to BC in June this year, compared with the same time last year. Visits by German tourists were up 31 per cent, while 26 per cent more Australians visited the province. Both Germany and Australia experienced more direct flights to BC, which can explain some of those extra visitor arrivals.

There was a 12 per cent increase in Mexican tourists, and a nine per cent increase in visitors from China.

“British Columbia boasts an amazing array of tourist experiences and it’s no surprise that people from around the world are spending their time in our beautiful province,” Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, says.

“We know that, in some parts of the province, the wildfires have taken a toll on the summer tourism season. However, as we start rebuilding this vital industry, it’s reassuring to know that June offered positive results.”
