No charges for those arrested during City Hall rallies

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver police say none of the people arrested during Saturday’s anti-racism and anti-Islam demonstrations were charged with anything.

Five people were put in handcuffs when 4,000 people turned out to Vancouver City Hall for an anti-racism protest countering a much smaller anti-immigration rally.

Sergeant Jason Robillard says the five people were arrested for Breach of the Peace, which is not a criminal offence.

“They would’ve been released the same day, just depending on the time. It’s up to the officers… that make those calls at the time. It depends on the circumstances. and there’s no criminal offences involved, otherwise we would pursue a criminal offence first and a Breach of the Peace second.”

Robillard says that’s typically how Breach of the Peace arrests play out.

“When the “breach the peace” is no longer about to be committed or there’s no longer a (tone) of violence, those people are released. So we basically, arrest them to prevent something more serious and physical harm from happening.”

It’s not clear which side the arrested parties were supporting.
