Fire, smoke cause extensive damage to furniture warehouse in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Crews were tackling a three-alarm fire in Newton, Surrey, this afternoon, where people reported flames shooting from the roof of a furniture warehouse.

The fire was on on 72nd Avenue, about a block from King George Boulevard, and blocked traffic.

Thick smoke could be seen from surrounding areas.

Matthew Janczi works in the area and says the building is a furniture warehouse.

“I don’t know if they’re manufacturing inside, I think they might be. But we saw flames shooting over the roof so it’s a fairly serious structure fire at this point.”

“Most people, most neighbouring stores have already evacuated.”

“There’s probably six fire trucks there that I saw.”

The warehouse has been partially destroyed by the fire.

Other neighbours say construction began on the roof of the warehouse today, but it’s unclear if that was the cause of the fire.

Tom Osborne works next door, and says the warehouse belongs to Deluxe Solid Oak Furniture.

“Firemen were blasting water into the window there, and it was kind of popping and glass was flying out and debris. So they told us all to get back. So we went back into the shop, and they said time to go.”

Assistant Fire Chief Chris Keon says the cause of the fire is still unclear.

“It’ll be investigated in the morning. The damage is extensive in that one suite. The fire damage was contained to one suite, there’s smoke damage to the rest of the building.”

He says no one was injured.

“There were employees in all the businesses in that one building and they were all evacuated.”
