Time’s up for bridge tolls, but don’t forget to settle your bill

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Bridge tolls are coming to an end, but commuters are being reminded they still need to settle their bills.

The NDP government is delivering on an election promise to axe bridge tolls this week.

“We want to put money back in the pockets of families, so effective September 1st, we’re eliminating the tolls on the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges,” Premier John Horgan said last week.

Now, ICBC’s Joanna Linsangan is reminding drivers they need to settle up if they want to keep driving in British Columbia.

“If you have a certain amount of outstanding toll debt, ICBC will be notified and we will place a hold on your file and that essentially means you won’t be able to renew your car insurance or renew your driver’s license until that debt has been paid.”

Bills need to be settled within 90 days.

TREO, which was set up by the former Liberal government to manage the bridges, is responsible for collecting the payments.

Horgan says, while up to 180 jobs will be lost when that’s dissolved, the revenue collection department is sticking around as long as it’s needed.
