No outdoor cooking in Port Moody this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The consequence of this non-stop heat and lack of rain means the City of Port Moody is putting a lid on outdoor cooking in public spaces.

Fire Chief Ron Coulson says the fire danger rating for that part of the region is “extreme.”

“These conditions significantly raise the risk for accidental fires in both wooded and urban areas. By foregoing the use of outdoor cooking appliances in City parks and green spaces, Port Moody residents can help to keep their community safe.”

There’s a ban on outdoor cooking appliances in parks, forested lands and public green spaces. It includes things like propane or charcoal barbecues, portable campfire devices or anything that needs a liquid of gaseous fuel.

“It’s just out of an abundance of caution and safety to ensure that the ultra-dry areas of our city do not catch fire, through the use of those cooking appliances,” Coulson says.

For any planned picnics you might still have on the books, Coulson has a suggestion.

“Bring your food already prepared, do the sandwiches or the wraps routine. And that way we will keep our parks as safe as possible.”

And if you’ll be prepping that food on your home grill, he urges you to make sure you’re not grilling near anything that could burst into flames.

This ban is effective immediately until further notice. Failure to comply with the ban carries a fine of $250.

Smoking is not permitted in City parks at any time, and open fires are banned year-round within the municipal boundaries of the City of Port Moody.
