Coast Guard rescue of two people from English Bay waters

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Coast Guard has been called to help rescue two people in English Bay this afternoon.

Lieutenant Navy Melissa Kai, with Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria, says a ship’s boat became detached and began to sink with two people on board about 4:00 p.m.

“Given the proximity of the sailing vessel to the two individuals in the water they were able to be recovered almost immediately.”

“The two individuals are still with the sailing vessel however they will be handed over to Canadian Coast Guard, and later to EHS.”

“It would be inappropriate for me to speculate on the medical condition of those individuals.”

Darren Grieve in the NEWS 1130 Air Patrol flew over the scene, where there was also a hovercraft.

“We have two freighters and then this situation is happening between the two freighters. I’m not sure if the freighters themselves have anything to do with this, or if they were trying to get involved with the rescue or what. But the Coast Guard is on scene now. One of the Coast Guard vessels has just left, and it’s not leaving in a big hurry… but the hovercraft is still on scene right next to this boat in distress.”
