The ride was planned before six-year-old Kira Short passed away in August after battling the disease for two years. By the time it was over, the illness had robbed her of the ability to speak.
Organizer Penny Martin says the fundraiser is going ahead to help her family with memorial costs and other expenses. “…To cover help with a headstone for Kira’s grave, to help Peter financially, to sort of get back on his feet a little bit, and I think he’s talking about possibly getting bench for at her grave site, if it’s allowed by the cemetery.”
Peter is Kira’s father Peter Short.
Martin says he will be on-hand for the event which also includes a toy drop-off at BC Children’s Hospital.
She adds some of the leftover money will help another family. “We’ve chosen another child who is in need as well. She is two-and-a-half years old and she’s currently about to go to Boston for the same kind of radiation that Kira had.”
Riders from as far away as Nevada have signed up to take part.
