Motion put forward to bring in more data for Vancouver’s rental market

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Finding a place to rent in Vancouver is tough and one of the hardest steps is just starting your search. The city is taking steps to create a database to show you where your housing options are.

The councillor who put the motion forward says even the city doesn’t know how many rental units are out there.

The data would include units that are still under under construction and will enter the housing markets in the coming weeks and months.

George Affleck says the intent of his motion was to gather information on where they’re at with social and other rental housing and where they could build more.

“There’s very little data or one place where you can go to get information on where all the units are in the city, as far as social housing and other kinds of rental units.”

He says it’s a part of council’s strategy to build more social housing.

“It’s difficult to know where we’re going if we don’t know where we are, there’s no real one place to really provide enough data, that says this is where we are, and this is where we want to go. The intent of this was to provide clarity on it, moving forward.”

His hope is to have this information publically available on the City of Vancouver’s website.

“The people that would benefit from this data include, the general public, who are looking to find out where these buildings are, where these units are, and how they could potentially connect with them.”

The motion was referred to staff and will come back in council in November as part of the Housing Reset Report.
