Preliminary Site C Dam report leaves a lot of questions unanswered

FORT ST. JOHN (NEWS 1130) – The BC Utilities Commission is out with a preliminary report on the Site C Dam. However, a number of questions remain unanswered.

In the report, a panel says it doesn’t have enough evidence to say the project is within its budget right now. But it adds if the project is delayed past 2019, it will certainly be over the $8.3 billion pegged for it.

The NDP wanted this project reviewed to get clarity on some of those issues, and that’s where BC Liberal Environment Critic Peter Milobar takes issue with the process.

“[It’s an] unnecessary delay, which even in this primary stages report very clearly states delays start costing money,” he says, calling the review unnecessary.

“Any delay obviously will start to cause costs,” he adds.

“An artificial buoy on a river diversion when you already have a project that’s one year ahead of schedule would put it back on its original schedule. But it’s still unnecessary,” argues Milobar.

The report says the final cost to shut down the project entirely would be $2.1 billion. But the panel says it needs a lot more information before issuing its verdict on the project.

The full report from the commission is expected on November 1st.
