RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver International Airport is giving you a heads up about some testing being done around the terminal this weekend that may alarm some people.
YVR says NAV Canada is doing flight checks on landing systems for a few runways both today and tomorrow.
“The ILS provides critical navigational information to aircraft on approach to assist with landings. Routine maintenance and flight checks of the ILS are a regulatory requirement to ensure the system meets stringent certification standards prescribed by Transport Canada. Flight checks involve a specially equipped Canadian Regional Jet (CRJ-200) that carries navigational equipment necessary to test and certify that the ILS equipment is accurately calibrated, functioning properly and safe for use,” the airport says in a statement.
Staff say the duration of a flight check could last as long as two hours, so if you see a plane that may appear to be struggling with its landing gear, don’t worry.
