Horgan says he’s serious about a BC bid for Amazon’s new HQ, despite heavy competition

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Our province’s new premier says he’s “very serious” about having Amazon build its new headquarters here in BC, despite competition from some of the continent’s most prominent cities.

Premier John Horgan hasn’t talked to Amazon directly, but says some of his staff has had conversations with the company about building the tech giant’s new $5-billion headquarters here.

“My officials have,” says Horgan. “Bruce Ralston is the minister responsible. His deputy minister has been working on this file, and I know there is an active bid.”

The province says it is contributing $50,000 to our region’s efforts to convince Amazon to build its second headquarters here.

Our province is hardly alone in pursuit of this.

Alberta has formed a team of business leaders and academics to assist Calgary and Edmonton’s bids. Toronto, Halifax, Winnipeg and Montreal have also expressed interest. Down in the U.S, major cities like Boston are also in the mix.

Earlier this month, the tech titan announced it is hunting for a site for a second North American headquarters, which would employ up to 50,000 people and comes with a planned US$5 billion investment.
