VPD issues nearly 2,000 distracted driving tickets in one month

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It seems some people just can’t leave their phones alone when they’re behind the wheel.

Vancouver Police say they handed out 1,969 tickets to distracted drivers during a month-long campaign, which wrapped up over the weekend.

The VPD has heard many excuses for distracted driving. One officer was told by a motorist that she thought it would be okay to have her cell phone on her lap while she ate lunch with both hands.

Another driver tried to justify his actions by explaining that he was watching his financial video from his website.

The VPD says distracted driving has surpassed impaired driving as a leading contributing factor of traffic fatalities in BC.

A ticket for using an electronic device behind the wheel will cost you $368.

“But that cost is nothing compared to the cost of losing a loved one,” says VPD Sergeant Jason Robillard. “It’s time to take a break from your phone.”
