Volunteers asked to disembark overbooked ferry

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There were some full ferries heading into this Thanksgiving weekend.

Darin Guenette with BC Ferries says the 7:30 pm sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo was oversold by 21 people, so a tough decision had to be made.

“The ferry was still at dock, and so we went looking for volunteers who may have wanted to come off the ferry and get on another one, which was actually waiting in dock.”

He calls the decision extremely rare and says while BC Ferries asked for 21 volunteers, plenty more actually said they would.

“People were great about it. So once we cleared off 21 people the ferry could go and they got on the next one.”

The 21 volunteers were given a $25 meal voucher and a sincere thank you.
