Vancouver hopes construction of tourist hot spot is done by 2018

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Now that the warm weather is gone for good, city crews are back to work on some of those longer-term projects around Vancouver. And one project in particular is getting the attention of a lot of people as construction has, once again, returned to the False Creek Seawall.

Work on the seawall actually started last year. “We had started a good portion of this work last winter. We completed as much as we could and this is our second phase. We’re out there to complete the work this year,” explains City of Vancouver Director of Transportation Lon LaClaire.

He explains why there was a delay in the work being finished. “When it came to spring, we put our tools down, recognizing the seawall is such a popular place that we couldn’t be working there in the peak period of the summer. So, we completed as much as we could last winter and this is our second phase.”

LaClaire adds because they couldn’t work through the busy summer season, they’re doing it now. “The section through Charleson Park, there’s construction of a completely separated path for cycling just a little south of the existing shared path where pedestrians and cyclists currently share the seawall together.”

The same goes for the section on Creekside Drive. “This is a portion where, the way it has been is that cyclists have to bike on the roadway there. And there we are creating a special path for cycling as well.”

LaClaire hopes to have all the work done by the spring of 2018.
