Transportation minister to give update on efforts to bring ride sharing to BC

By

VICTORIA – We’re expecting to learn more details today on the province’s plans to bring in ride-hailing.

Transportation Minister Claire Trevena has scheduled a news conference for this afternoon to discuss the government’s next moves.

The New Democrats promised during last spring’s election campaign to bring services like those offered by Uber and Lyft to BC by the end of this year.

But Trevena recently suggested more work needs to be done, especially on safety issues and understanding the social and economic impacts ride-hailing could have on the taxi industry.

The opposition Liberals and Greens also campaigned in favour of ride sharing, with the Greens preparing to introduce a private member’s bill.

Trevena has previously refused to put a timeline on the government’s plans to permit ride-sharing companies to operate in B.C.

Today’s news conference is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. NEWS 1130 will bring you the details when they come in.
