Canada, Mexico reject US NAFTA demands: reports

There’s word Canada and Mexico are about to publicly reject the most contentious American proposals at the latest round of NAFTA renegotiations.

We knew the discussions at the negotiating table were getting more tense. Now, Bloomberg News is reporting Canada and Mexico will reject what they see as hardline proposals being put forward by the US, such as demands to open our dairy sector, more American content for autos, and a sunset clause.

But a source with knowledge of the talks is phrasing this differently, telling us Canada disagrees with some proposals — and have said so — but they are not rejecting everything and progress is being made.

Both the prime minister and the Mexican president have vowed to remain at the table and continue discussions despite the apparent impasse on some tough topics.

It’s not clear how US President Donald trump will respond. He has threatened to tear up NAFTA if a better deal can’t be reached. He’s even floated the idea of trying to reach a bilateral deal with Canada.

The fifth round of talks is expected to take place in early November in Mexico.
