Third storm on the way, another rainfall warning issued for the South Coast

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Make sure you have boots and an umbrella handy this weekend. We are in for yet another rain storm.

Environment Canada says rain will be heavy at times, specifically on the South Coast. The agency says the rain will start over Vancouver Island overnight and reach the mainland coast by morning and intensify Saturday afternoon and evening. Forecasters say 50 to 70 millimetres of rain is expected depending on your location.

“Conditions are forecast to improve around midnight on Saturday across the South Coast with only a few showers lingering,” they say in a statement.

There is also a warning of localized flooding in low-lying areas. “October is the beginning of the wet season here on the [South] Coast. Typically, in the month of October we see 300 to 400 millmetres for the entire month in most locations and to get half of that in just two storms back-to-back was quite a bit. Particularly, the intensity of the rainfall. It’s one thing to get 300 millmetres over a week or two, but when you start to see rainfall rates of 10, 15, 20 millimetres an hour — those are like those tropical downpours.”

The areas that will likely be hit the hardest will be the North Shore, including West Vancouver. Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Surrey and Langley can also expect a deluge. Meantime, the Fraser Valley including Abbotsford, Chilliwack and east of Hope should also prepare.

There is also a warning of localized flooding in low-lying areas and you are being reminded and encouraged to clear catch basins.
