The clocks ‘fall back’ an hour this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – This is the weekend we say goodbye to Daylight Saving Time. But turning back the clocks could affect everything from your sleep pattern to safety on the roads.

This weekend, the clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday.

“In the fall, the main health consequence that people have noticed is there are more accidents Sunday night,” Dr. Yvette Liu tells City News. “It may be due to people staying up later and the darkness. In the spring, we notice more car accidents Monday morning. We also notice more heart attacks.”

She says the time change affects people differently.

“People who are night owls… people who have more energy at night will handle the fall time change better. People who are morning people are going to handle the springtime change better.”

The time change pushes the sunrise and sunset back an hour. So, there’s more light in the morning on your way out the door. But it gets dark in the afternoon.

Premier John Horgan has told NEWS 1130 he will consider getting rid of Daylight Saving Time in BC, but any change would not come into effect for 2018.
