BURNS LAKE (NEWS 1130) – Nearly six years after a fatal explosion at a northern BC sawmill, the owners have again been ordered to pay nearly one million dollars in fines.
The January 2012 tragedy at Babine Forest Products in Burns Lake killed 45-year-old Robert Luggi and 42-year-old Carl Charlie.
It also injured 20 workers.
WorkSafeBC investigators later determined the Oregon-based Hampton Affiliates failed to take safety measures which could have prevented the explosion.
A review has upheld penalties initially issued in 2014, but the company hasn’t exhausted all possible appeals yet.
