Is Black Friday still relevant?

BELLINGHAM, WA. (NEWS 1130) – We in Canada may not be enjoying Thanksgiving today, but folks on both sides of the border are reaping the benefits of some good deals. Many retailers both in-store and online are promoting deals for Black Friday.

In years past, it’s been a struggle for some brick-and-mortar stores as an increasing number of people shift their shopping habits online.

In Bellingham today, it was a change from years past when videos circulated on social media of shoppers squeezing themselves through just-open store doors trying to get that elusive deal.

Bellingham Whatcom Chamber of Commerce President Guy Occhiogrosso says there will be door-busters, likely at the big stores, but probably not at the smaller shops. “You might not see the door-buster deals and the deep discounts to get you in the door.”

Another question you may have as there seems to be discounts available year-round is: Is Black Friday still relevant?

“Absolutely. The small retailers need to be accessible just as the national, large retailers are as well,” adds Occhiogrosso who says the deals are available usually for days after. “Well, there’s the Saturday, Cyber Monday, Tuesday — it’s more of a philanthropic touchpoint.”

He points out you don’t just have to shop in Bellingham. Small towns off the highway, like Lynden, will also have stores offering up discounts.
