Highway 1 closed in the Fraser Valley due to mudslides

By

HOPE (NEWS 1130) – Brace yourself for delays if you’re heading to the BC Interior today. Highway 1 is closed between Bridal Falls and Hope because of two mudslides.

“It’s a pretty significant landslide. It certainly covers the highway. And it’s fairly wide, as well,” described Darren Grieve from the NEWS 1130 Air Patrol from the slide near Bridal Falls this morning.

We’re hearing no one was hurt.

“They do have people set up on the overpasses to make sure nobody gets onto the highway. So, as far as traffic is concerned, they’ve got that contained. But as far as excavating equipment or anything they would need to remove this slide, no activity or machinery on site at all yet,” says Darren.

“It’s really kind of an eerie sight to see Highway 1 — the Trans-Canada Highway — completely devoid of traffic. I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

You can get around the closure by using Highways 11 and 9 to get to Highway 7 and go through Agassiz.

However, there is construction happening on the Agassiz-Rosedale bridge, slowing traffic to single-lane alternating, so you should expect long delays on the detour through Highway 9.

There’s no word yet on when Highway 1 might re-open. We’re expecting an update on the situation later today.
