One of several shops damaged in Vancouver fire re-opens

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A local charitable store is re-opening following a massive fire in Vancouver’s Kerrisdale neighbourhood just a few months ago. The Salvation Army is officially back up and running as of November 24th.

Seven businesses in total were burned when the fire broke out on the afternoon of June 22nd and very quickly things got out of control. The flames eventually ripped through stores at 41st Avenue and Maple Street.

Deborah Lowell is with the Salvation Army and says it was tough to see all of these businesses coping with the loss. “We were absolutely devastated, of course, because we knew it would have a direct impact on not only our staff, but the staff in the neighbouring businesses as well and on their livelihoods. That’s certainly always a concern of ours.”

The silver lining to the fire is it turned out to be an opportunity to upgrade some of the building.

Lowell adds the store has had a soft re-opening and people are happy to see the store up and running just in time for the holidays.
