‘A setback for all of us,’ says Horgan in response to stayed Bacon charges

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Decisions in the courts that are seen as off-base by the public diminish confidence in the system. That’s what BC’s premier is saying after a judge’s ruling to stay charges in the Surrey Six case.

The judge’s decision last week to stay murder and conspiracy charges against Jamie Bacon was largely met with confusion and outrage by the public.

Today, Premier John Horgan offered his view:

“Whenever the judicary makes a decision that appears to be discordant in the minds of the public — seems to be a bit off-base — that diminishes our confidence in the system. So, we’re going to work as hard as we can to maintain confidence in our judiciary.”

“We’re going to be working as aggressively as we can to make sure that the confidence has our judicial system. This is a setback for all of us — whether we were following the Bacon case or the implications of the Bacon case,” he adds.

While a judge has sealed the reasons for her decision in this case, Horgan says he will try to get more information out to the public.
