One northbound lane re-opened on Highway 99 in South Surrey

By

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – There’s some good news for commuters out of South Surrey this morning.

One northbound lane has now re-opened to traffic just north of 16th Avenue. It had been closed since yesterday morning, when a truck with an excavator on board slammed into the 152nd Street overpass.

There’s no word on when the second northbound lane will re-open.

The overpass itself is still closed in both directions.

The morning commute today was relatively smooth, despite one lane remaining closed. Darren Grieve in the NEWS 1130 Air Patrol hopes for a repeat tomorrow.

” I think that particular stretch of the highway in the morning and afternoon commutes really aren’t the busiest, anyways. People get onto the 99 northbound just after 152nd, so maybe that’s why we’ve seen this light traffic. So, I would expect tomorrow to be like today.

Kellen Truant, Bridge Area Manager with the Ministry of Transportation’s Lower Mainland district, told us yesterday that crews were hoping have the highway fully open “in the next day or so.”

“This will be a significant repair so it will require a good deal of assessment,” he told us.

“It does happen and we have various degrees of damage, this is probably one of the more serious that I’ve seen,” he added.
